Sample Rooftop FIT Installation
Rooftop FIT installations are typically done on barn and/or shed roofs. In this example, we installed a 50kWac system on an implement shed.
This particular shed has a near true south facing roof where we could mount a total of (240) 250W panels for a total of 60kWdc power. In this case we had a bit more roof space than required which allowed us to incorporate some access space between array segments for easier future access.
You will see in the upper right picture that we installed a total of (10) Kaco/Eaton 5 kW inverters for this single phase installation (for 3-phase installations we normally will install a single central inverter which are not manufactured for single phase installations).
With sheds and barns like this one, the roof is typically metal clad with straps on truss design. With such a roof, we attach to the straps and use a special screw designed by Schletter (the racking system we usually use) that has a lag-bolt thread on one end to go into the pre-drilled hole (to prevent splitting) and a machine thread on the upper end to attach the racking. Between the lag and machine thread ends of the design is a self sealing EPDM gasket to maintain the weather integrity of the roof. All of our racking materials are made of either aluminum or stainless steel and we never have aluminum components in direct contact with your steel roof.
With FIT applications, you require qualified engineering support and project management to work through the OPA and Hydro One application and installation process - this is not a situation for amateur installers or slick sales people to try on their own.
