Sashaan, we’re particularly excited about the “microFIT” and "Small
FIT" opportunities. These are contracts where the solar system
is rated to produce 10,000 watts or less (microFIT) or 500,000
watts or less (Small FIT) to give you great returns on investment.
Use one or more of your building roofs or an area of your property
for a microFIT photovoltaic array and the Ontario Power
Authority (OPA) will buy all the power that you generate for a
guaranteed 54.8-54.9¢ per kilowatt-hour while it costs you about
27¢ or so per kilowatt-hour to produce. Typical break-even points
are about 7-1/2 years then you enjoy about 12-1/2 years of pure
can be a great way to build a retirement fund or supplement your
contracts have a smaller payout rate but costs are reduced to
provide a similar breakeven point of 7 years or so and of course
provide much higher revenue.
the transferable contract - with the Ontario Power Authority -
is firm for 20 years! Yes you read that right. Too good to be
true? It gets better!
systems are generally low or maintenance free for the 20 years,
require no attention from you to operate and any power you actually
need for your own home or business you will continue to buy, through
a separate meter, at the normal rate, just like you pay now.
this and you’re allowed to depreciate the asset at the same rate
as the revenue generated.
years from now when your contract ends, your panels will still
be producing power (our manufacturers warranty at least 80% power
output after 25 years), so you can continue to sell power (no
doubt at a much lower rate) or use it for yourself.
are they doing this?
this program makes no sense if all the Ontario Government wants
is more power—there are lots of other means to generate power
(like coal) at much less than these green energy tariff rates.
real answer, aside from the desire to “go green”, is that the
government wants to build green energy industries in Ontario to
create green jobs for our future economy.
attract industry to Ontario, there must be a market for the products
and here is where you come in. The Green Energy Act FIT program
requires you to buy products from companies with a high Ontario
content with a reasonable and assured return on investment.
of 2011, 60% of the installation must have Ontario content and
we meet that requirement with all of our suppliers.
Tariff (payout) rate indicated in the table to the left is as
in effect as of March 22, 2012. Almost for certain, these rates
will be reduced over time. That will not affect those that have
contracts but new applicants will receive the reduced rate. In
other words, don't wait - apply now.
this opportunity can’t last forever, an OPA microFIT or FIT contract
signed now is firm for 20 years no matter what happens to the
program or governments in the future.
